Locate the last proven stage
Record the exact model, hardware revision, firmware, MAC address and provisioning mechanism. Establish whether the phone discovered a server, requested a file, received it, accepted its syntax and activated the settings. A successful file download proves only one stage.
If the phone never requests a file, begin with discovery, network reachability and its configured provisioning URL. If it downloads a file but keeps old settings, focus this investigation on the selected content and its ownership.
Choose one configuration owner. A discovery hint or MAC-based filename is not authentication; verify both file access and the resulting device behavior.
Check which template produced the file
Compare the requested filename and device identity with the provisioning server’s mapping. In Sangoma Endpoint Manager, global addresses, templates and extension mappings are separate inputs. Check the actual model and account assigned to the MAC address rather than editing a similarly named template.
Read only the relevant configuration fields in a restricted workspace. Provisioning files may contain SIP credentials and private server addresses. Do not attach a complete file to a public forum.
Separate a delivered file from an accepted configuration
Inspect the server response and the phone’s visible provisioning or system log. A login page returned with an apparently successful HTTP status is not a usable configuration. Check content type, expected file syntax and exact-model parameter names against the firmware documentation.
Use one harmless, reversible visible setting as a controlled marker if the manufacturer supports it. Confirm that the marker changes before modifying authentication, VLANs or remote-management access. Preserve the original file and a recovery path.
Find competing configuration owners
If the change appears and then disappears, identify any cloud redirect service, periodic template refresh, PBX manager or local administrator applying another configuration. Record the timing of each change. A factory reset can simply cause the same unwanted owner to provision the phone again.
After correcting the authoritative mapping, test a scheduled refresh and restart. Verify registration, inbound calling and the intended phone button behavior. Remove temporary markers and confirm the previous owner no longer overwrites the accepted configuration.
