Treat the 9871 as a touch control model

The 9871 has a 5-inch 1280 x 720 touch display and no physical line keys. Cisco documents up to 32 virtual line keys on the screen. Those positions can represent lines or features and do not equal call capacity.

Record the visible pages, assignments, user role and registered calling platform rather than comparing it to a ten-key 9861 by headline counts.

Keep radio and non-radio variants separate

Cisco distinguishes 9871 with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth from 9871NR without those radios. Preserve the exact product identity and prove Ethernet or WLAN association, network policy, addressing, DNS, time, registration and media in sequence.

Firmware does not add absent radio hardware, and a radio link does not prove a usable SIP or media path.

Reconcile virtual keys, KEM positions and SIP lines

Cisco PhoneOS 5.0(1) expanded 9871 virtual keys to 32 for Webex Calling and BroadWorks while retaining a maximum of 16 extension SIP lines. With a KEM, the administrator can keep 4 or 8 positions on the phone and move other assignments to modules.

The data sheet maximum and KEM totals include feature positions; they must not be reported as concurrent calls.

Budget USB, PoE and modules as one desk

The 9871 has USB-A and USB-C and supports up to three KEMs. Cisco documents one KEM under PoE and requires Cisco Power Adapter 3 for two or three.

Capture power source, USB loads, module count, enumeration, automatic module firmware update, layout and stability separately.

Bind PhoneOS security changes to the active platform

Cisco dates PhoneOS 5.0(2) October 15, 2026. Its web-password warning, SIP NOTIFY authentication and certificate-validation changes have platform and setting conditions. A separate September 2026 advisory depended on vulnerable software, Unified CM registration and enabled Web Access.

Do not infer exposure, remediation or trust from a version label alone.

Pilot touch, radio and KEM workflows end to end

Test the touch layout, page changes, every retained host assignment, each KEM page, wired or wireless recovery, headset and USB routing, transfer, directory behavior, two-way media, DTMF, restart persistence and approved emergency workflow.
