The 9800 research starting point

Cisco's March 2026 9800 datasheet identifies PhoneOS and lists Cisco Webex Calling, Unified CM, Webex Dedicated Instance, BroadWorks and Asterisk as tested and certified platform paths, plus Microsoft SIP Gateway compatibility. This is manufacturer evidence, not a claim that VoIP.info reproduced a certification or that every feature behaves the same on each platform.

Choose the device and platform together

The 9811 is the current two-line, wired entry model, while the 9841 provides four physical keys, a maximum of four line or programmable assignments, Gigabit Ethernet and power-dependent USB-A output without listed KEM support. The 9851 adds six physical line keys, a color display, USB-A and USB-C, and one supported KEM without introducing integrated Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The 9861 adds a larger color display and ten physical line keys. The 9871 replaces those physical line keys with a 5-inch 1280 × 720 touch interface and platform-dependent on-screen assignments. The 9861 and 9871 have exact radio and no-radio variants and power-dependent expansion. Verify which features are available with the selected platform and PhoneOS release; a Webex-, BroadWorks- or Unified CM-specific workflow should not become a generic SIP promise.

Understand procurement variants

Cisco lists model-, color-, TAA-, radio- and NFC-related part-number differences across the family. Match the exact ordered SKU to the current datasheet and deployment requirements. A compatible family name on a reseller listing is insufficient to establish radios, onboarding hardware, expansion modules, accessories or provisioning ownership.

Make firmware and exposure explicit

Record the exact model, calling platform and PhoneOS release before approving an upgrade. Cisco's September 2025 advisory documented two 9800-series SIP-software vulnerabilities that required Web Access to be enabled, noted that Web Access is disabled by default and identified 3.3(1) as the first fixed release in the 3.x train. That dated fixed-release statement is not a claim that 3.3(1) is the current preferred release. Recheck Cisco's current release notes and security advisories for the selected platform, and avoid enabling Web Access without an operational need.

Pilot a representative desk

Test account activation, two-way audio, incoming calls, hold, attended and blind transfer, message waiting, headset operation, emergency-location handling and restart recovery. If users need line monitoring, shared desks or platform-specific meetings, add those to the acceptance sheet rather than assuming that successful registration proves the feature.

Ask who supplies firmware updates, reviews advisories and resolves interoperability faults. Keep the manufacturer datasheet, exact software release and provider's supported-device statement with the deployment record.
