Identify the exact 9861 radio variant

Record product ID, hardware VID, MAC, installed PhoneOS and calling platform. Cisco distinguishes 9861 with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth from 9861NR without those radios. Both have a 5-inch color display and ten physical line keys.

Do not infer radio hardware from a saved profile or family brochure. Confirm the printed identity and effective interface.

Count keys, KEM positions and SIP identities separately

Cisco documents up to three KEMs. Each has 40 positions across two pages, while the host has ten physical line keys. The published 130-position total includes extension and feature keys and does not establish 130 SIP identities or calls.

Capture the calling-platform limit, host layout, every attached KEM and each assignment before changing a template.

Design wired and wireless paths as different deployments

For a radio model, record Ethernet and Wi-Fi association, authentication, VLAN or SSID, addressing, DNS, time and registration as separate states. The NR model does not acquire radio capability through firmware.

A healthy WLAN does not prove SIP reachability, and a registered account does not prove two-way RTP.

Budget USB, PoE and every KEM together

The 9861 has USB-A and USB-C and is listed as PoE Class 3. Cisco documents one KEM under PoE, while two or three require the local Cisco Power Adapter 3.

Treat host power, module enumeration, automatic KEM firmware update, loaded layout and stable operation as separate checkpoints.

Apply PhoneOS and platform requirements precisely

Cisco dates PhoneOS 5.0(2) October 15, 2026 and documents platform-specific security updates. The release page also distinguishes broad support baselines from PhoneOS 5.0 features that require Unified CM 15.

A download folder, platform certification or current release record does not prove installed build, feature enablement, accessory support or completed calls.

Pilot the 9861 desk and monitoring path

Test wired and, where applicable, Wi-Fi recovery; all ten host keys; every attached KEM page; headset and USB routing; transfer; two-way media; DTMF; restart persistence; and authorized emergency behavior. If ThousandEyes is used, prove agent configuration, collection and the exact measured path separately.
