Time affects more than the display
Phones and PBXs need coherent time for useful logs and certificate-validity checks. A device starting with an incorrect clock can reject an otherwise valid certificate or make a registration incident difficult to correlate across systems. Time zone and synchronization are different settings. NTP synchronizes time; the configured zone and daylight-saving rules control local display and may influence application schedules. A correct-looking wall clock is not proof that the device is synchronized to a reliable source.
Check the dependency chain
Confirm the configured time source, DNS resolution and network access from the phone's actual VLAN. Then inspect the device's reported synchronization state or logs where available. If provisioning requires HTTPS and time is wrong before provisioning succeeds, establish a supported bootstrap path for time rather than disabling certificate checks. For PBX time conditions, test the configured application time zone and holiday behavior explicitly. Do not assume every module inherits the same zone as the phone display.
Make incident times comparable
Record timestamps with their time zone and note known clock offsets. Compare synchronized systems before attributing a delay to the network. A several-second clock difference between captures can falsely suggest a request arrived before it was sent. After changes, reboot a pilot and verify time recovery, certificate validation and scheduled behavior. Monitor time-source availability with other infrastructure dependencies. Treat time service as part of phone deployment, with an owner and recovery plan, rather than a cosmetic field set once at installation.
