Wi-Fi for VoIP phones

Evaluate coverage, airtime and roaming during real calls.

A shared radio medium

Wi-Fi phones compete for airtime with other clients and interference. A strong signal does not establish low contention or a smooth roaming transition. Test the actual working locations during representative activity.

Survey the workflow

Place calls at desks and along movement paths. Record interruptions and association changes rather than only a stationary speed test. Compare one handset with the expected number of simultaneous devices.

Verify the exact hardware

Check supported radio bands, security methods and roaming behavior in the phone's administration guide. An optional adapter may differ from built-in Wi-Fi. Wireless data also leaves a power requirement: use the correct adapter or other supported supply.

Retain a wired comparison

Test a wired endpoint on the same service to isolate wireless effects. If wired calls are also impaired, inspect the upstream path before adding access points. Apply the WLAN vendor's voice design guidance and repeat calls under normal load. Power planning remains relevant to the access points supplying the wireless network.

A detailed staff-training session connects everyday call controls with a configured office system: monitored colleagues, shared parking, a conference server, voicemail and a door intercom. It also explains why a local dial tone does not prove the phone has working service. Use it to plan which features staff need to practise, then check those features against your own provider’s instructions.
