Freeze model, cables and the first failed direction
Record the printed HT841 or HT881 identity, hardware, serial or MAC, installed version, bridge or router mode, NET1 and NET2 links, every FXO circuit, the FXS device and the first failing inbound, outbound, lifeline or post-upgrade behavior. Redact credentials, telephone numbers, certificates and packet payloads.
Expect four FXO plus one FXS on HT841 and eight FXO plus one FXS on HT881. Stop if the physical inventory or port role differs.
Trace one PSTN circuit through every routing layer
For the affected FXO port, preserve PSTN line state, local SIP port, profile activation, enabled state, redacted identity or peer target, inbound forwarding or DID rule and outbound PBX route. Grandstream’s UCM example increments the SIP port by two per FXO port, but the effective base and port ID must be verified locally.
A peer trunk and a registered extension are alternate designs. Registration, inbound mapping and outbound line selection are separate checkpoints.
Verify network mode without resolving the source conflict by assumption
Record the exact hardware, negotiated links, NET1 and NET2 roles, bridge or router mode, address, gateway, DNS, time and upstream NAT. The product page and datasheet describe dual 10/100/1000 ports, while the FAQ says dual 10/100; use device evidence rather than choosing the convenient publication.
Link, management access, provisioning, SIP signaling and RTP are distinct outcomes.
Inspect the physical lifeline port and mode
HT841 maps its FXS lifeline path to FXO4; HT881 maps it to FXO8. Confirm the circuit is on that port and preserve the effective Auto, Always Connected or Always Disconnected setting. Compare normal-power and authorized outage behavior without assuming that ordinary SIP calls prove the relay path.
Do not perform an outage test where emergency, alarm, medical or other safety service depends on the line.
Reconcile firmware with profile and port activation
For release 1.0.11.8, verify the HT8x1 family, ht8x1fw.bin filename, August 14, 2026 release record, published MD5, transfer result, reboot and installed version. The release notes publish Profile Active and Enable Port defaults as No, so compare effective profile and every FXS or FXO enable state with the pre-change configuration.
Publication, download, checksum match, restart and reachable management each stop short of accepted service.
Retest the original line and adjacent boundaries
After one authorized correction, repeat the original inbound or outbound path, line selection, caller ID, digits, answer, disconnect and two-way audio. Verify the separate FXS device, intended lifeline path, restart persistence and any required T.38 or fax workflow, then sample unaffected ports without claiming fleet-wide proof.
No gateway, line, PBX, call, packet, fax, outage or firmware action was tested for this diagnostic.
