Start with platform and service support
Linphone publishes builds for Windows, macOS and GNU/Linux; its stable archives identified 6.2.3 packages for all three desktop tracks on September 22, 2026. Its daily snapshots are separately labelled unverified, so record the stable or snapshot channel as well as the version. Bria describes Windows and Mac clients; its current desktop release page lists 6.8.8.1 dated September 28, 2026 above 6.8.8 dated August 31. The patch is documented only for erroneous suspicious-software detection, while mobile tracks retain different versions. Confirm the exact operating-system release, application build, package signature and endpoint-security result before choosing or deploying the client. A download page does not establish support for a particular headset, PBX module or enterprise edition.
MicroSIP's official primary download table identified 3.22.18, released October 3, 2026, for its regular and Lite editions at review on October 7. Each edition still has installer and portable forms; record the exact artifact and retrieval date rather than carrying one family version into an installation or support record.
Zoiper publishes Windows, macOS and Linux desktop builds, but its free and paid feature boundaries must be checked before comparing it with another client.
Blink's current release evidence is platform- and channel-specific: Windows 6.0.3, Linux 6.0.6, Blink Pro for Mac 7.1.6 in the App Store and a separate Mac beta 9.4.0 at review. The vendor changelog landing page still summarized stable Mac 7.0.0, so retain the exact artifact and retrieval source rather than collapsing them into one Blink version.
PhonerLite is a separate Windows-only desktop option with installer and portable ZIP packaging. Its release and Windows policy boundaries should not be transferred to MicroSIP or to non-Windows platforms.
Telephone is a macOS-only SIP client. Its reviewed App Store binary remains version 1.6 from June 2022 with a listed macOS 10.13 minimum, while the current repository instructions build Opus 1.3.1, LibreSSL 3.1.5 and PJSIP 2.10 with a macOS 15.6 minimum target. Evaluate the signed distributed binary and an exact source commit separately; repository head is not a newer release.
Baresip is a modular core rather than one uniform desktop package. Its project matrix points to different operating-system and distribution packaging paths, so record the selected build, interface and maintainer before comparing it with a finished desktop application.
Sangoma Phone adds a PBX-bound desktop case: the current release pointer identifies FreePBX/PBXact 15 or later, while the administration procedure carries Sangoma licensing, module, PJSIP-extension and operating-system assumptions. Use the Sangoma Phone guide to keep the downloadable client separate from PBX readiness and browser access.
Own the account settings
Document the SIP identity, registrar or proxy, outbound policy and the source of configuration. Linphone supports remote provisioning via an XML configuration, while Bria provides portal-based account distribution. Changing a Bria Solo account in the app can fail because those settings are controlled centrally.
Deliver secrets through the approved provisioning path, rotate them when a workstation is lost, and avoid sharing one SIP account across users unless its server behavior is explicitly designed for that use.
Zoiper 5 also documents XML provisioning and option restrictions. Confirm the selected edition and protect both the provisioning URL and configuration as credential-bearing assets.
Blink documents local SIP address and password entry with DNS discovery and an advanced server override. A central fleet provisioning path is not established by that workflow.
PhonerLite's .plp import can carry registrar, username and password material. Protect profile delivery and do not equate a local import file with centrally governed fleet provisioning.
Verify audio and security on the workstation
Test the chosen microphone, speaker and headset while a call is active, then after unplugging and reconnecting a device. For encryption, inspect both signaling transport and media negotiation. Bria documents modes in which a call will fail when required TLS or SRTP is unavailable.
Use a packet capture and PBX logs when a call rings with no audio; do not infer a codec failure from registration alone.
PhonerLite lists TLS, SRTP and ZRTP separately and recommends TLS when SRTP key material would otherwise travel in clear signaling. Verify the selected signaling and media result rather than treating the feature list as negotiated-call evidence.
If the operating-system input works but callers hear silence, use the softphone microphone diagnostic to separate per-app permission, selected input, application capture, SDP direction, outbound RTP and remote decode before changing codecs or NAT.
When a connected headset is not the route a call actually uses, follow the wrong-audio-device diagnostic. It separates operating-system defaults, per-app assignments, softphone speaker, microphone and ringer selections, hot-plug state and the active call path before any SIP or codec change.
Exercise a normal workday
Check a fresh login, sleep and wake, VPN or Wi-Fi changes, transfers, voicemail indication and an incoming call while another app uses the microphone. Record which administrator owns updates, diagnostics and rollback.
Update Baresip core and libre as an accepted set
The current Baresip guide records upstream Baresip 4.12.0 and libre 4.12.0, both released September 30, 2026. The libre security notice makes the loaded dependency part of the acceptance record; do not mark a workstation current from the client banner alone. Preserve the distribution package or exact source commits, compiled modules, library evidence and rollback path.
Treat Jitsi Desktop release channels as legacy migration evidence
Jitsi Desktop remains a SIP-capable desktop client distinct from Jitsi Meet. Record its stable or pre-release label, installer or community APT source, operating system and Java runtime; no RPM package or modern support commitment is established by the current repository.
Pin Wave Desktop to 1.35.6 and its UCM feature gates
Grandstream's September 21 release notes identify Wave Desktop 1.35.6 for Windows and macOS. Its SSO, beta AI, remote-control and WhatsApp changes depend on UCM configuration, permissions, peer-client versions or UCM firmware. Preserve those dependencies and the installed build instead of transferring the Web or mobile family number into a desktop acceptance record.
Keep MicroSIP account, network and Windows audio state distinct
MicroSIP can save multiple SIP accounts but uses one active account; its Local Account makes unregistered direct IP or domain calls. The current MicroSIP guide also separates manual public address, IP rewrite, STUN, ICE and VPN-interface selection from the Windows capture and playback path.
Trace a Sangoma desktop login through the PBX-owned service
For a Sangoma Phone client that cannot sign in, use the focused diagnostic rather than treating the application as a generic SIP account form.
Keep Baresip package, modules and workstation devices together
The Baresip symptom workflow proves the selected configuration directory and loaded module set before it interprets registration, codec negotiation or local audio.
Accept wireless-headset controls separately from audio
A desktop client can carry audio while answer, end, hold or mute controls remain unsynchronized. Use the business wireless headset category for selection and the paired diagnostic for one failing action.
Test what each incoming-call button tells the server
Blink distinguishes 603 Reject, 486 Busy and a local alert dismissal that sends no SIP decision. The Blink inbound-disposition diagnostic turns those controls into a bounded desktop acceptance matrix for other phones, forwarding and voicemail.
Pin each VoIPstudio desktop artifact and audio path
VoIPstudio publishes distinct Windows executable and MSI, macOS Intel and Apple-silicon, and Linux paths without one public common build number. The desktop client guide records the installed build, service account, microphone, call output and ringer before comparing behavior.
Pin the Webex desktop artifact and assigned service
Webex publishes Windows x64 and Arm64, separate macOS processor packages and Linux DEB and RPM artifacts. The Webex App guide records the build, platform and Phone Services result instead of assuming one desktop feature set.
Treat the MicroSIP 3.22.19 audio notes as hypotheses
The MicroSIP guide records a microphone-muted fix and audio-device memory-corruption detection in the 3.22.19 notes. Preserve installed build, Windows route, selected input and output, driver, SDP and RTP before assigning one workstation symptom to that change.
A portable PhonerLite package is not stateless
Program-directory permissions can change where PhonerLite loads its profile, global settings, contacts and logbook. Follow the PhonerLite local-state diagnostic after an update or move.
Prove the effective Linphone desktop profile
The Linphone local-data guide separates package, user profile, configuration, databases and logs across Windows, macOS and Linux without treating older documented paths as current proof.
Diagnose Blink registration before testing desktop calling
Use the Blink registration diagnostic to separate the gray account state from DNS, transport, server response and later call behavior.
Keep desktop fetch handlers separate from next-start provisioning
Linphone Desktop documents a linphone-fetch-config URI handler for immediate retrieval, while the Liblinphone provisioning URI is applied during the next Core start. The guide preserves that timing boundary.
Capture the effective desktop account before reconfiguration
The Linphone registration diagnostic preserves AccountParams, selected route, transport and AuthInfo before an account is recreated.
Keep packaged JsSIP applications inside their browser-runtime boundary
A desktop wrapper that embeds JsSIP still needs package, WebSocket, registration, page lifecycle, media permission and playback evidence from the JsSIP guide.
Record Jitsi Desktop by exact tag and package source
The Jitsi Desktop guide explains why GitHub Latest, a later-numbered release, a pre-release and the legacy stable line must remain separate evidence.
Keep Linphone 6.2.4 package and profile evidence together
The local-data guide labels the public file-tree reference as desktop 4.2 evidence and proves effective 6.2.4 paths before restore.
Keep Wave Desktop identity and call state separate
The Grandstream Wave diagnostic distinguishes user-portal credentials, UCM mapping, client session, signaling and selected audio devices.
Pin RingCentral desktop package and rollout evidence
The RingCentral App guide distinguishes end-user and IT packages, auto-update ownership, Windows and Mac artifacts, VDI components and the future 26.4.10 rollout.
Pin Zoom Workplace desktop support and release evidence
The Zoom Workplace client guide distinguishes platform support, installed build, release track and the future 7.2.5 entry from one running desktop process.
Pin the NextivaONE desktop build and update owner
The NextivaONE guide separates published requirements, installer, available update, restarted process and app-reported version.
Pin the Teams desktop build and update owner
The Teams Phone client guide distinguishes published packages, automatic update policy, update ring, dashboard version and running process.
