Verify model, V2 label and physical connector plan
Record the exact model, chassis label and hardware revision before choosing firmware or a wiring plan. The v2 family provides 16, 24, 32 or 48 FXS ports across GXW4216, GXW4224, GXW4232 and GXW4248. These are line-supplying FXS ports for analog subscriber devices, not FXO ports for taking a PSTN line.
Map every wall jack or patch-panel pair to a numbered gateway port. The current installation guide documents RJ21 Telco cabling as an alternative on the lower-port models and mandatory on GXW4248. A connector being seated does not prove pair order, extension ownership, ring voltage or the destination reached.
Separate the physical port from its SIP identity
Each FXS port can have its own SIP User ID, Authenticate ID, password and display name, and is assigned to one of four SIP profiles. Treat physical port, analog hook state, profile, registration identity, presented identity and PBX extension as separate records.
The v2 Routing ID can alter From and Contact presentation while the SIP User ID remains the registration and authentication identity. That does not guarantee a provider will accept or display the requested caller ID. Preserve the effective per-port values and the upstream policy that owns numbering.
Interpret registration and reachability narrowly
The status page distinguishes analog Hook state from SIP Registration. A Registered row proves a current binding for that account and profile; it does not prove the correct analog jack rings, outbound policy accepts the number, media passes, fax completes or failover is active.
The gateway also documents outbound operation without registration. Record whether inbound service requires registration, whether a profile uses primary and failover SIP servers, the selected keep-alive method and whether Prefer Primary is enabled. A server switch or re-registration transition is evidence of device policy, not proof that the upstream service was available.
Design hunting and ringing as a separate layer
A hunt group associates ports for incoming distribution. Linear and circular modes select an eligible member; they do not make every member ring simultaneously. The registration setting Active Port Only versus All Ports changes how hunt members register and must not be inferred from which analog phone rang.
Write down the public number, SIP account, profile, hunt members, sequence, registration mode and intended busy or no-answer outcome. Verify one incoming call at a time before adding concurrency, forwarding or PBX ring groups.
Keep analog, fax and signaling tests independent
Commission dial tone, off-hook detection, ringing, caller ID, disconnect supervision and DTMF per physical port. For fax, choose T.38 relay or G.711 pass-through only after confirming end-to-end support and then test actual document completion; a checked option is not evidence that the remote carrier or fax endpoint used it.
Codec support, wideband capability and encrypted signaling or media remain separate from analog electrical behavior. Capture the call path and the first failed boundary rather than changing impedance, gain, DTMF, codec and fax settings together.
Own provisioning and firmware as controlled state
The current documentation describes web configuration, XML provisioning and GDMS template support for GXW4200 v2. Distinguish a template being edited, fetched, parsed, applied, committed, rebooted and visible in effective per-port state. Protect provisioning credentials and do not expose generated configuration files.
Use the V2 firmware lane that matches the chassis label and read the release notes before staging. The 1.0.35.1 notes document downgrade restrictions for some GXW4224, GXW4232 and GXW4248 V1.0E hardware after 1.0.29.6 or later. Do not cross-load V1/V2 images or assume rollback is available. No gateway, analog endpoint, cabling, PBX, registration, firmware, call or media stream was inspected or tested.
