Why this is useful
Fred Posner explains how SIP routing, registration ownership and media services can be split across Kamailio, Asterisk and RTPengine. The discussion of backend probing and reconnect surges helps frame a larger deployment.
Applicability
Concepts still applicableAstriCon 2021 talk using Kamailio 5.5 examples. Treat it as an architecture lesson; our current written cluster uses 6.0 documentation.
Keep in mind
- Dispatcher failover does not automatically move active PBX calls or media sessions to a surviving node.
- Rate limits and user-count examples are illustrative, not capacity guarantees. Review module semantics and shared-NAT traffic before implementing limits.
- TLS or SRTP termination at an edge creates separate security boundaries; it is not end-to-end encryption or proof of regulatory compliance.
